6 Steps for a Successful St. Patrick’s Day in Dogtown (2023 Edition)

The 2023 Dogtown St. Patrick’s Day Parade and Irish Festival is THIS WEEK!! We have been looking forward Take one last look over our six-step checklist to help ensure your St. Patrick’s Day is a success.

1. Make a plan for parking or getting a ride to and from Dogtown

Whether you live in Dogtown or are driving in for the day, you need to make sure you know where you will be able to park and what streets will be open to get in and out of the neighborhood. Be sure to review our detailed maps below (and visit our FAQs page) as you put your plan in place. Since day-of parking and street restrictions begin at 6:00 a.m., Dogtown residents parked along these streets are encouraged to move their vehicles the night before.

If you are a visitor, ride-hailing is a great option to get yourself to Dogtown without worrying about what roads are open and where to park. The ride-hailing pick-up area is located on Clayton near Crescent.

Aside from street parking, parking is also available for a fee at the St. Louis Zoo parking lots (north of I-64 and off of Oakland and Berthold), St. James the Greater Parish Park Lot, and at the St. Louis Marketplace (south of Manchester).

No matter how you arrive in Dogtown, remember that you will not be able to cross Tamm Avenue while the parade is happening between 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.

2. Get your go-to green outfit ready

Of course! Hopefully, you have already snagged some of Emily Stahl’s Dogtown stickers to wear with your Series Six official festival shirt. If you don’t have a go-to green outfit yet, don’t worry. Series Six still has plenty of green gear that you can pick up in-store at 26 The Blvd Saint Louis Street | Richmond Heights, MO 63117 on March 16. You can also stop by the Series Six booth at the Irish Festival on March 17 and get your gear on the go.

3. Pack your pockets and purses

As has been the case since 2013, coolers and backpacks (as well as bottles and outside alcohol) are prohibited from the Parade and Irish Festival. This presents a great opportunity to pack light and support local businesses and vendors. When you’re packing your purse and/or pockets, consider bringing some of these festival essentials:

  • Credit card and/or cash
While most vendors will accept credit cards, having cash on hand never hurts!

  • Sunglasses, hat
    Fingers crossed for good weather…

  • Poncho, rain boots, umbrella
Even if the weather isn’t as good as we hope, a little rain won’t keep us from having a good time! Come prepared so you can be as comfortable as possible.

  • Jacket, gloves, beanie
Rain or shine, Friday is looking to be chilly.

  • Hand sanitizer
For use before, during, and after using the many portable toilets available throughout the neighborhood.

  • Child care accessories
Any containers needed for child care purposes will be allowed at the event.

4. Know the schedule of events

The Irish Festival begins at 9:00 a.m., which gives you plenty of time to stop by a vendor or two while you scope out a good spot to watch the parade. The parade leaves from Wells Drive (in Forest Park) at 11:00 a.m. and moves south down Tamm Avenue towards Manchester. The route takes approximately 30 minutes, so the 90 floats will complete the parade within about two hours. The Irish Festival officially ends at 6:00 p.m. and all Tamm Avenue businesses will close by 8:00 p.m.

If you’re looking for entertainment, check out the schedule for live music and dancing throughout Dogtown:

Heavy Riff Main Stage

  • 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. 120 Minutes (80s and 90s Cover Band)

  • 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. Rusty Nail (Celtic-infused rock originals and traditional Irish pub songs)

State Farm Family Stage

  • 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. Wild Geese (Irish folk band)

  • 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. Number 9 Coal (Irish folk trio)

Keep in mind that cell phone signals may be weak due to crowd size. When visitors are preparing to leave the festival, carve out some extra time to find cell service, hail a cab or ride-sharing accommodations, and make your way to the pick-up area.

5. Be respectful of the neighborhood and its residents

As you enjoy St. Patrick’s Day, be mindful that you are doing so in the middle of a residential neighborhood. Many of the sidewalks along the parade route are adjacent to residential homes and businesses. Please do not trespass on private property. While crowds may be larger around the intersection of Clayton and Tamm, it is usually less crowded towards the end of the parade route towards Manchester.

There will be numerous dumpsters and trash barrels throughout the neighborhood, so be sure to dispose of trash in the proper receptacles. If you are interested in helping with the neighborhood clean-up, join us at The Pat Connolly Tavern on March 18 at 10:00 a.m. Free pizza and beverages will be provided after picking up trash.

Portable toilets are available at every intersection across Tamm. Public urinating will not be tolerated.

Dogtown residents, business owners and staff, security officials, and event managers will be making every effort to ensure the 2023 St. Patrick’s Day Parade and Irish Festival is enjoyable for all who attend. In appreciation of their efforts, please be courteous and respectful - and have fun!

6. Share your experience

As you are celebrating (or later when you’re on WiFi), share your experience on social by tagging @dogtownunited (on Facebook or Instagram) and using #DogtownStPatricksDay. You can also tag some of the partners and sponsors. We love to see your photos! If you are a professional photographer or are interested in making your photos available to use in marketing for next year’s event, please email dogtownunited@gmail.com for more information.

Have a great time tomorrow and be safe. Sláinte!

3 Ways to Spend St. Patrick's Day in Dogtown

First Timers

10:30 a.m. Hail a Ride to Dogtown
The parade route runs along Tamm from Oakland to Manchester and is less crowded towards the end of the route. Ask your driver to drop you off at Slim Chickens (if approaching from east or south) or Studio 89 (if approaching from north or west) and walk about 7 minutes to the parade route. Check out our FAQs to see a complete map of street closures.

10:45 a.m. Claim Your Parade Spot

11:00 a.m. Hold Your Ground!
To get a good spot, you’ve got to show up early! But that doesn’t mean there aren’t plenty of ways to entertain yourself while you wait for the parade to pass by. Make friends with your fellow parade-watchers, ask them if they live in Dogtown and where they recommend spending the rest of your day. Take turns holding your spot and sneaking off to some of the bars and vendors nearby.

  • Irish Culture Zone at St. James

  • St. James Bud Light Tent

  • Felix’s Pizza and Pub (satellite location at St. James)

  • Colombo’s Cafe and Tavern

12:00 p.m. Watch the Parade
The parade starts at 11:00 a.m. and lasts about two hours. Assuming you’re stationed towards the back half of the route, you can expect to start to seeing floats around noon.

2:00 p.m. Venture to the Party Zone
Once the parade is over, make your way north up to Clayton and Tamm for the Bud Light Party Zone. This is the busiest area, but by 2:00 p.m. it will start to slow down. Grab a bite to eat from the local bars and restaurants (some may be satellite locations nearby their storefront), checkout the vendors and catch some Celtic-infused rock on the Heavy Riff Main Stage!

TBD Hail a Ride Home
We’re not sure how long you’ll last, but when it’s time to head home, head over to the ride-hailing area on Clayton near Crescent in the Zoo’s Frog Lot. From there you can call a ride and make it home safe and sound.

The Family Plan

9:00 a.m. Pay to Park at the Zoo Lot
Don’t forget to bring a printed or digital copy of the kid-friendly St. Patrick’s Day Scavenger Hunt!

9:30 a.m. Claim Your Parade Spot

11:00 a.m. Watch the Parade

[ OPTION 1 ]
11:30 a.m. Play in Turtle Park or Oakland Avenue Playground

Located in the grassy space between Oakland and the highway, are two fun kid-friendly parks where everyone can burn-off some energy before heading home for the day.

[ OPTION 2 ]
11:30 a.m. Make Your Way to St. James the Greater
If your kids are little older, consider venturing to the Irish Culture Zone at St. James at 6401 Wade (about a 10 minute walk). Since the parade is still going on, we highly recommend taking Graham up to Wade and avoiding the crowds on Tamm.

11:45 a.m. Enjoy Traditional Irish Food and Music

At St. James, you can enjoy live music by the Irish Aires and enjoy traditional Irish food, including the parish’s famous corned beef and cabbage dinner.

12:30 p.m. Head Home

All Out Irish

7:30 a.m. Start with a Solid Breakfast
Of course, you must have coffee and Bailey’s. Then go with a traditional Irish breakfast of bacon, eggs, potatoes, beans, toast and tomatoes OR keep it simple and have a bowl of Lucky Charms.

8:00 a.m. Get Ready
Tune in to your favorite Celtic/Irish playlist while you put on every green accessory and piece of clothing you own. If anyone in your household isn’t already wearing green, give them a pinch to start the day. Make sure you have a printed or digital copy of the St. Patrick’s Day Scavenger Hunt handy for the day!

8:30 a.m. Hail a Ride to Dogtown
I would warn you to steer clear of Clayton and Tamm…but we all know you’re locked in for the Bud Light Party Zone. Check out our FAQs to see a complete map of street closures and make sure your ride drops you off in a good spot (maybe at Courtesy Diner).

9:00 a.m. Check out the Party Zone
Welcome (back) to the Bud Light Party Zone! First things first, get your group together, grab a round of Guinnesses and toast with a “Sláinte!” Shop some of the local vendors, take note of the porta-potty locations and then make your way to Heavy Riff Main Stage for some classic rock covers.

9:30 a.m. Claim Your Parade Spot
Since you’re in the middle of the action, you’ll need to claim your spot early if you want a good view of the parade. While you wait, make friends with your fellow Irish-imposters, complain/compliment the weather and take turns holding your spot while a few of you get the next round of beers.

10:00 a.m. Try a Local Brew or Food

There are more local restaurants and bars in the Party Zone than you’ll know what to do with, although some may only be satellite locations nearby their storefront.

  • Heavy Riff Brewing Company

  • 2nd Shift Brewing

  • Felix’s Pizza and Pub

  • Stone Turtle Restaurant

  • Seamus McDaniels

  • Tamm Avenue Bar

  • Hogtown Smokehouse

  • Sweet Em’s Coffee & Ice Cream

  • Fields Foods

11:30 a.m. Watch the Parade
The parade starts at 11:00 a.m. and lasts about two hours. Assuming you’re stationed around Clayton and Tamm, you can expect to start to seeing floats around 11:30 a.m.

12:00 p.m. Eat Lunch in the Irish Culture Zone
You said you wanted “all out Irish,” so make your way south on Tamm to St. James the Greater for the Irish Culture Zone. Here you can experience live music and dancing from Irish Aries, traditional Irish food, including the parish’s famous corned beef and cabbage dinner, and general merriment and enthusiasm.

2:00 p.m. Checkout the Main Stage
Make your way back to the Party Zone for Rusty Nail, a Celtic-infused rock band that will be taking the Heavy Riff Main Stage from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. Hang out here, sampling local brews from the nearby Heavy Riff Brewing and making friends with visitors and locals alike.

TBD Hail a Ride Home
Make your way to our ride-hailing area on Clayton near Crescent in the Zoo’s Frog Lot and grab a safe ride home for the night.

Get this St. Patrick's Day Party Started!

One of the perks of living in Dogtown is that the St. Patrick’s Day Parade and Irish Festival happens right in your backyard (or your front yard, if you live on Tamm). But why not share the convenience and excitement of the day with friends and family by hosting a St. Patrick’s Day Pre/Post-Party? We are just about three weeks away, so it’s the perfect time to start planning!

1. Send Invitations

3 WEEKS BEFORE MARCH 17

First and foremost, let’s get this party started by inviting some guests. As you’re putting together your guest list, be sure to invite only your most fun, most respectful friends…because we expect visitors to treat Dogtown as if it were their own neighborhood!

We have created an invite template that you can open and update in Word. Find the link and instructions below:

  1. To download the invite template, click here and save the Word document to your computer.

  2. Open the Word document and click in the text boxes to backspace and type in your party information:

    • Time

    • Address Line 1

    • Address Line 2

    • RSVP (or other)

  3. Don’t worry if the background looks washed out! It’s setup as a watermark in the background. When you export, it will be bright and colorful.

  4. When the invite is updated, click File and then Save as Adobe PDF. If that is not an option, click Save As, then under the file name click the field that currently says Word Document (*.docx). From the dropdown list of file types, select PDF (*.pdf).

  5. Now, there are three ways you can send this invite.

    • Via Email as a PDF: Invite will not appear directly in the body of the email, but as a file attachment that must be opened to view. Attach this PDF directly to an email and send to your guests.

    • Via Text as a PDF: Invite will not appear directly in text message, but as a file that must be opened to view. Attach this PDF directly to an email and send to yourself. Open the email on your phone and click gently on the image to open it full screen. In the bottom corner, click the save icon and then select the Messages icon to send the file. Note:

    • Via Text as an Image: Invite will appear directly in text message, like a photo. Attach this PDF directly to an email and send to yourself. Open the email on your phone and click gently on the image to open it full screen. Tap on it again and wait a moment for the page number to disappear, then take a screenshot and crop the edges to remove any background.

2. Schedule Catering

2 WEEKS BEFORE MARCH 17

There are so many great places in Dogtown that can help you create a truly local St. Patrick’s Day spread at your party this year. BUT be sure to make arrangements early so they have plenty of time to accomodate! Try any of these spots with advance ordering options online:

3. Decorate

1 WEEK BEFORE MARCH 17

Well, we already know you’re working on your outside house decorations for our House Decorating Contest, (don’t forget to submit according to contest rules by March 12!) but have you made a plan for inside decorations as well? Here is a quick checklist to make sure you’re on track:

  • Wreath

  • Pennant Banner

  • Garland

  • Centerpiece

  • Photos and/or Slideshow

  • Tableware

Don’t worry! We’ve got a Pinterest board to get your creative juices flowing!

4. Plan activities

1 WEEK BEFORE MARCH 17

Of course, your party will be so fun you won’t NEED any activities, but just in case you do, these 23 Fun St. Patrick’s Day Activities for Families from Play Party Plan are perfect for kids and adults. This list has everything! Bingo, trivia, charades, games and a scavenger hunt for kids.

Of course, we couldn’t help ourselves…we had to create a DOGTOWN St. Patrick’s Day Scavenger Hunt, too. Click here for a print-ready version you can play when you and your guests leave the party and head into the heart of Dogtown for the parade and Irish festival.

5. Go Grocery Shopping

3-4 DAYS BEFORE MARCH 17

In addition to your catering order, you probably still need to pickup a few groceries for your party. Great news: if you do your shopping at Fields Foods, you can round-up at the register and the proceeds will go directly to St. Patrick’s Day in Dogtown!

Here’s a little shopping list to get you started:

  • Irish beer

  • Bailey’s

  • Champagne

  • Orange juice

  • Green food coloring

  • Ice (if you have a place to store it)

  • Fresh flowers (for your centerpiece)

  • Green and orange veggies

    • Bell pepper

    • Broccoli

    • Celery

    • Cucumber

    • Snow peas

    • Carrots

    • Baby tomatoes (ONLY orange ones)

  • Veggie dip

6. Clean and setup

1 to 2 DAYS BEFORE MARCH 17

A couple days before St. Patrick’s Day, do a final tidy and clean to make sure your house is guest-ready. If you aren’t worried about your kids messing with decorations, go ahead and put up any decorations you can in advance. Speaking of advance, go ahead and prep any food your planning to prepare and have it ready to go in the refrigerator.

This is also a great time to give your guests a quick reminder of any street closures or parking restrictions around your house. You can direct them to our FAQ page for more information.

7. Party!

MARCH 17

On the day of the party, get up early and pour yourself a big, hot cup of coffee with plenty of Bailey’s. As your kids get up and around, assign them the very important task of testing all the activities.

Setup your phone to the speakers and start blaring your favorite Irish/St. Patrick’s Day playlist. Here are some recommendations if you need them: .

If you haven’t already, put out the rest of your decorations and start up that photo slideshow, if you’re planning on having one. Prepare any final food items and set them out for snacking. Now that everything is ready, and you are 1+ cups of coffee in, it’s time to transition to your first green drink of the day.
